Freeport was founded around 1830. Visitors to the area admired LaGrange Bayou's naturally-created harbor on Choctawhatchee Bay's east side, near Choctawhatchee River's mouth. It was originally called "Genoa" and "Four Mile Landing," but as the Civil War raged, people began calling the town "Freeport" because docking in the port between LaFayette and Four Mile Creeks was literally free. Another historical interpretation of the name comes from the story of an unclaimed cargo of wine found in the port; according to the story, all the local residents enjoyed some free port. Many families who first settled the area and founded Freeport still call the area home. The census of 1850 found that most heads of households worked as farmers or boatmen; most residents toiled in their fields and either fished during the off-seasons or worked on the commercial fishing and cargo ships. Farmers traded the produce they grew and livestock they raised good they couldn't make or grow themselves. The construction of lumber mills produced a large influx of new settlers, and many landings were established by families living along Four Mile Creek, LaGrange Bayou, Black Creek, and Choctawhatchee River. Freeport was Walton County's political center for decades, due largely to schooner and steamboat passageways to Pensacola via the Gulf of Mexico and Geneva, in Alabama, via the Choctowhatchee River. Freeport's first mail came from Pensacola over the water, and a stagecoach trail stretching to ...

825 Gordon Drive, SE Named for Franklin Delano Roosevelts Mother Park donated to City of Albany by company formed to develop the City, Maj. EC Gorton, President; original layout of park went from Somerville Road to Second Avenue. Robert Loveladys father Horace Elbert Lovelady constructed the bridge. In the 1930s the bridge was moved from Ferry Street to Delano Park. The historic "Delano Rose Garden" was re-created between the years of 2005 and 2006 as an exact restructuring of the former rose garden that once stood as part of the original Delano plan. The garden had been none existent for decades but was finally rebuilt in junction with the revitalization. The need for a way to connect the western portion to the middle portion is a high priority for the city. 6th Avenue (US 31) successfully cuts the park in two, effectively depriving the western portion of much needed attention. A historical trail has been built, beginning in the eastern portion, traveling through the middle portion and eventually connecting with the western portion in an attempt to spur more foot traffic throughout the park. The trail also intends to allow for a safer crossing of 6th Avenue as it is one of the busiest streets inside the city

Cheaha Mountain, often called Mount Cheaha, is the highest point in Alabama, 2407 feet high and is located a few miles north-west of Delta in scenic Cheaha State Park. The highest point is marked with a USGS marker in front of Bunker Tower, a stone Civilian Conservation Corps building with an observation deck on top. Cheaha Mountain is part of the Talladega Mountains, a final southern segment of the Blue Ridge unlike other elevations of the Appalachians in north Alabama, which are part of the Cumberland Plateau. The Cheaha State Park was first opened to the public in 1933, after the state acquired the property for the 2799-acre park. Although it was open, the first six years saw a joint effort by the state and the National Park System that allowed for construction by the Civilian Conservation Corps of Cheaha Lake and its stone bath house, eleven stone cabins, two stone pavilions, Bunker Tower, and the Bald Rock Group Lodge. This is a five part series. Elberta, Alabama is widely know for its annual Elberta German Sausage Festival. This event, started in the mid-70s, is held the last weekend in March and October to support the town's volunteer fire department. The event features polka music, Elberta German Sausage, and 250 arts and crafts vendors. We attended the March event and had a great time. The people were friendly, the food was great, and the exhibits were worth seeing. If you plan to go to the next sausage festival, please plan ahead. Get there early--traffic, traffic, traffic later in the day! Linden, Alabama is the county seat for Marengo County Alabama. Originally known as the Town of Marengo, it was changed to Hohenlinden in 1823 to honor the county's earliest European settlers, French Bonapartist refugees to the Vine and Olive Colony. Hohenlinden was chosen to commemorate Napoleon Bonaparte's battle at Hohenlinden, Germany, in which the French were victorious over the Austrians and Bavarians. The spelling was later simplified to Linden. For more information on Linden, Alabama go to www.freetravelwithus.com Visit www.FreeTravelWithUs.com formore travel locations. The Unnamed Bridge in South Alabama aka The Dolly Parton Bridge. About 20 miles north of Mobile, Alabama on Interstate 65 there is a 7-mile-long bridge expanding over the Tensaw Delta somewhere between mile-marker 21 and 30. What is so strange about this long bridge is that it has no official name. I have traveled over the bridge many time and I have never seen a name plate identifying bridge. I have heard for years that the locals call it the "Dolly Varden Bridge." Kinda strange name for a bridge. I figured that since this area is a fantastic place to fish, the bridge was named after the Dolly Varden trout that may be in the delta area under the bridge. I took it upon my self to research this hot topic a little further. I talked to Jim, one of the local fishermen in the area, to see if he could give me some background on the name's origin. After talking to Jim for a few minutes, he gave me one of his strange looks, and said, "Frankie D, that bridge is not called the Dolly Varden Bridge, you misguided soul. That bridge is called the Dolly Parton Bridge!" Fort Charlotte aka Fort Conde played an important role in Mobile's early history. Spanish troops made siege of the fort to oust the British from the area during the American Revolutionary War. Originally founded in 1702 at 27-Mile Bluff up river, Mobile was relocated in 1711 to the current site where a temporary wooden stockade fort was constructed to protect the town. It was named Fort Louis after the old fort up river. In 1723, construction of a new brick fort with a stone foundation began. Renamed Fort Condé in honor of King Louis XIV's brother. All over Alabama! Rednecks. Dancing. Hilarity ensues. Thank you once again, Alabama. Country Crossing support concert in Dothan, AL (1/10/09) Jake Owen, Keyshia Cole (replacement for Jamie Foxx), and Travis Tritt all performed... but these guys were the real show. Ronnie Gilley, founder of the BamaJam Music Festival, held a support rally to build Country Crossing, a bingo hall that also is home to several restaurants and a concert arena. It's now closed and Ronnie Gilley has recently pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and bribery bit.ly Note: I do not own any of the music in this video. The music was playing over the loud speakers for the most part and the rest is Travis Tritt. The man loves Alabama and whatever's all over it.

Cathedral Square in Mobile Alabama Cathedral Square is a municipal park in Mobile, Alabama. It is bordered by the streets of North Claiborne, Dauphin, North Jackson, and Conti. At one time what is now Cathedral Square was part of Mobile's 18th century Catholic cemetery, the Campo Santo. The Campo Santo was roughly 400 feet long by 300 feet wide and filled portions of what are now several city blocks between Joachim, Dauphin, Franklin, and Conti Streets. Most of the burials were moved to the new Church Street Graveyard in 1819 as Mobile's city boundary expanded. A few graves continued to be accidentally unearthed along Conti Street as late as the 1890s, however.
