This April is the one year anniversary of the BP Oil Spill. Despite how quiet things have been in the media, the Gulf Coast is still suffering the effects of months of crude oil and dispersants. When we investigated in October it was apparent that not only is the ecology still distressed, but so are the people, as they rely heavily the marine and coastal environments. You are invited to travel to the Gulf Coast to support the Ocean Foundation in restoring marine habitats. We will also take you on an exploration of the local ecology and culture and invite you to talk to people affected directly by the disaster to learn about the inextricable links between people and their environment. www.elevatedestinations.com

Cheaha Mountain, often called Mount Cheaha, is the highest point in Alabama, 2407 feet high and is located a few miles north-west of Delta in scenic Cheaha State Park. Its largest lake is Lake Chinnabee. The highest point is marked with a USGS marker in front of Bunker Tower, a stone Civilian Conservation Corps building with an observation deck on top. Cheaha Mountain is part of the Talladega Mountains, a final southern segment of the Blue Ridge unlike other elevations of the Appalachians in north Alabama, which are part of the Cumberland Plateau. The Cheaha State Park was first opened to the public in 1933, after the state acquired the property for the 2799-acre park. Although it was open, the first six years saw a joint effort by the state and the National Park System that allowed for construction by the Civilian Conservation Corps of Cheaha Lake and its stone bath house, eleven stone cabins, two stone pavilions, Bunker Tower, and the Bald Rock Group Lodge. This is a five part series. Uploaded by BPplc on Aug 23, 2011 What's the best part about a Gulf Coast vacation? Is it the great outdoors of Mississippi? The fresh seafood in Louisiana? The pristine beaches of Florida? Maybe it's the beauty of Alabama. The Gulf Coast means something different and something special for each of us. But, there's one thing that we can all agree on: the Gulf Coast is the world's good-time headquarters and its #1 vacation spot. There. We're glad we settled that.

You can find this five-acre site seven miles west of Tensaw on County Road 80 off Alabama Hwy 59. On August 30, 1813, a force of about 700 Creek Indians destroyed Fort Mims, killing 250 defenders and taking at least 100 captives, in the first major battle of the Creek War. USS Drum Touring Inside USS Drum (SS-228) is a Gato-class submarine of the United States Navy, the first Navy ship named after the drum, any of various types of fish capable of making a drumming sound. Drum is presently on display as a museum ship at the Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama. Drum was laid down on 11 September 1940 at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine. She was launched on 12 May 1941 and commissioned on 1 November 1941, Commander Robert H. Rice in command. According to materials obtained at the submarine, Drum was the twelfth of the Gato class but was the first completed and the first to enter combat in World War II. USS Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota-class battleship, was the sixth completed ship named Alabama of the United States Navy. However she was only the third commissioned ship with that name. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 (a few months after Pearl Harbor) and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the reserve duty. In 1964, a campaign was launched to bring the "Mighty A" home to Alabama as a memorial to the state's sons and daughters who had served in the armed forces. Alabama school children raised almost $100000 in mostly nickels, dimes, and quarters to help bring her home to her final resting place. I remember them coming through our school to collect money. Every school kid that contributed received a free pass to the park. It took me a long time to use my pass, but it was well worth the wait! The USS Alabama is docked at the Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama.
