Der Park wurde um 1850 von weissen Siedlern besiedelt und erhielt seinen Namen von Ebenezer Bryce, der sich um 1875 dort niederliess. Der Nationalpark wurde 1924 zum National Monument und 1928 zum National Park erklärt.

Immigrants named it Greenville due to the forests of oak trees that reminded them of their former home in Greenville, South Carolina. Greenville's original name was Buttsville. After becoming the county seat in 1822, its name was changed to Greenville, in remembrance of the former locale in South Carolina of many of the original settlers. The first county seat was at Fort Dale, a fortification that was named for Sam Dale, who fought to defend the area during the Creek Indian War. At the 2000 census the population was 11846 and is designated a Micropolitan Statistical Area. Tuskegee has been an important site in various stages of African American history. The name Tuskegee means "Warrior" in the Muskhogean dialect of the Creek language. It was the name of at least two Indian tribes, one living in central Alabama and the other in Tennessee. Tuskegee was the home of the Taskigis, Channuanugee, Chehaws and Tallassee Indian tribes. Tuskegee was founded and laid out in 1833 by General Thomas Simpson Woodward who fought in the Indian Wars under Andrew Jackson. It was probably named after an Indian tribe, the Taskigis, living in this section. General Woodward built the first home in town. It was partially destroyed by fire and rebuilt by Mr. William Campbell. The first home on the square was built by Mr. James Dent. Monroe County was founded in 1815 on lands ceded by local Native American tribes. Monroeville, once known as Centerville, was renamed for James Monroe and incorporated on April 15, 1899. The town is famous for its fantastic gospel music events. I was reminded of this when I saw a sign on the side of the theatre. Hank Williams, Sr's childhood home is now a museum in Georgiana. It is located southeast of the center of the state, in the Gulf Coastal Plain. The city population was 201568 as of the 2000 Census. The city was incorporated in 1819, as a merger of two towns situated along the Alabama River. It became the state capital in 1846 when the capital was moved from Tuscaloosa. In February 1861, Montgomery was selected as the first capital of the Confederate States of America, until the seat of government moved to Richmond, Virginia in May of that year. The city of Talladega was incorporated in 1835, just two years after the creation of Talladega County. The Creek village Talatigi was located near the site before white settlement. As settlers began to move into the area, the name gradually evolved into Talladega (pronounced "Talla DE ga" unless you are an out of state race car fan and it is then pronounced "Talla DA ga"). Talladega has always been the county seat of Talladega County. It is home to one of the nation's most comprehensive educational programs for the deaf and blind, the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, as well as, Alabama's oldest private historically black liberal arts college, Talladega College.
