This time Gary Smith along with his wife Marilyn set out to trace all of the coastlines of Mexico. After finishing the ride to Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego on the Pan American Highway the first 4 motorcycle movies in these adventure rider DVD series, Mexico, Central America, Colombia / Ecuador & Peru, Chile, Argentina were produced and simply titled "Burro Has Three Wheels". From Florida through the Southeastern States of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, it's down the gulf coast of Mexico to the Belize border. Heading west, they cross the Yucatan Peninsula and up the Pacific Coast eventually traversing the Northern border region of Mexico and Baja California. Gary and Marilyn are riding a 2005 Ural with a sidecar. Built in Russia beginning in 1939 it's an exact copy of the famous WW II German BMW motorcycle. At the 2000 census the population was 11846 and is designated a Micropolitan Statistical Area. Tuskegee has been an important site in various stages of African American history. The name Tuskegee means "Warrior" in the Muskhogean dialect of the Creek language. It was the name of at least two Indian tribes, one living in central Alabama and the other in Tennessee. Tuskegee was the home of the Taskigis, Channuanugee, Chehaws and Tallassee Indian tribes. Tuskegee was founded and laid out in 1833 by General Thomas Simpson Woodward who fought in the Indian Wars under Andrew Jackson. It was probably named after an Indian tribe, the Taskigis, living in this section. General Woodward built the first home in town. It was partially destroyed by fire and rebuilt by Mr. William Campbell. The first home on the square was built by Mr. James Dent. Meet Bill Barrick, the Executive Director of Bellingrath Gardens and Home. Since 1935, the public has been able to enjoy a spectacular array of flowers and fine décor at this 65-acre Alabama estate. Bill calls Bellingrath Gardens and Home the epitome of a Southern Garden, and is proud to share "the grand old lady" with the scores of visitors who come to Theodore, Alabama each year.

Posted by Allie in Alabama tourismSep 29th, 2011 | no responsesDauphin Island, Alabama - What a Difference a Year Makes Dauphin Island, Alabama, named after Louis XIV's great-grandson, is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Entry to the island is made by crossing the Gordon Persons Bridge, three mile long high rise bridge, which opened a in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. Dauphin Island, along with most of the south Alabama area has been severely affected by the oil spill in 2010. Dauphin Island's annual Deep Sea Rodeo, which brings in thousands of tourist, was cancelled. The tourists stayed away for the summer. Long term affects are unknown especially in the seafood industry that thousands rely on for their livelihood? The seafood industry may be back, but will our neighbors to the north have enough trust in the safety of the seafood to start buying again? Once you loose your customers, it is hard to get them back. So, what do the business owners and employees do in the meantime? We revisited Dauphin Island during the 4th of July weekend this year. There are signs that the area is rebounding.
